author: Thomas, William Holland, 1805-1893
date: June 30, 1839
extent: 2p
summary: This document is a letter written by William Holland Thomas, dated June 30, 1839, to Dillard Love. The letter informs Love that his claim valued at five hundred dollars has yet to be decided as the Commissioner of Indian Affairs has yet to forward the claim to the Secretary of War for approval. Thomas regrets that he will most likely not know of the final decision on the claim until the end of the following month since the Office of Indian Affairs is quite busy handling claims relative to treaties with the Cherokees, Creeks and many other tribes.

Dear Sir,
your communications requesting a remittance of five hundred dollars was duly received, in consequence of some want of formality your claim had again to berefered [referred] to Col [unclear: Buck]who has charge of the emigrating Bureau and has been reported by him to the commissioner of Indian Affairs, who for want of time to act on it, has not yet made his report to the [deleted: commissioner of Indian Affairs] Secretary of War, you can form no idea of the business now before the Indian Department in addition to the Cherokeebusiness there are the claims arrising [arising] under the treaties made with the creeks, and many other tribes, the business transacted by the commissioners under

I presume no payments will be made on any [added: Cherokee] claims until all is examined and reported to the Secretary of War and -- receives his approval. I have brought the claims of the CherokeesEast before the Department and supported them by the best evidence I could procure, as yet have received no [deleted: answer] decision thereon, the probability is that I will not before the last of next month, I shall remain as long as I think the interest of the claimants necessarily require I am at present engaged in making a report to the commissioner of Indian Affairs. Showing the amount due the CherokeesEast under the provisions of the late treaty. the small Book of valuations made by you and Squire [unclear: Hare], was misplaced when I came here and was only found a few days since, I have not yet ascertained from the commissioner what his opinion is respecting those valuations, on examination, I find Gen Smithwas not in office when those valuations were made and at the time he gave you and [unclear: Squire Hare] the order, though that defect may escape the notice of the commissioner, and if noticed may probably be explained away. I regret that your claim has not been paid which would have inabled [enabled] me to comply with your request. I delayed writing to you in hopes of being able to remit you the money required, give my respects to Mrs Love --
yours & c [et cetera]
