summary: This is a letter to H.P. King, dated July 30, 1839, from William Holland Thomas concerning his delay in Washington City while he awaits a decision from the Commissioner of Indian Affairs on the Eastern Cherokee claims. Thomas also relates a report that Cherokee leaders Major Ridge, John Ridge, Elias Boudinot and John Ross have been killed and another that only the Ridges have been killed.

    HaywoodNC [North Carolina],
    Sir,

    The Commissioner of Indian Affairs had not yet made a decision on the claims of the Cherokeesremaining East, but is [deleted: expaning] [added: examining] the evidence in relation thereto and will probably complete the dicisions [decisions] in which the above cherokeesare interested, betwixt the 10 and 15 of next month I am satisfied that the Commissioner of Indian Affairs is doing all he can to have the business disposed of, the large amount involved by the above decisions, will compel me to remain, notwith standing [notwithstanding] my desire to return, but when a business is commenced it must be persevered in until completed I write in the war office from 9, in the morning until 5. in the evening until 5. in the evening and then at my room until from 10 to 11 -- oclock but the labourious [laborious] part of my business is nearly completed. after [deleted: d] a few days I will be less confined. As to my business intrusted to your care, no new instructions are deemed necessary previous instructions will be observed until changed

    By information received here the Cherokeesin Arkansaware in a great state of excitement some reports say Maj [Major] Ridge, Jno [John] Ridge, Boudinottand John Rossare killed and other statements say Ridgesare killed only I presume the War Department will be correctly informed in a few days Inform Mother I am in good health and believe this climate agrees with me as well as any I have ever been in I will continue to write until I [deleted: come home] return give my respects to inquiring friends. I have been expecting a letter from you several days and suppose one is on the way in answer to my letter requesting information as to [unclear: white] having been taken from the civil by the Military Authority
